Cecilia Skingsley, head of the Bank for International Settlements’ Innovation Hub, will depart next month—cutting short her five-year term by two years. The MOVE comes amid broader leadership changes at the central bank umbrella organization.

Skingsley, former deputy governor of Sweden’s Riksbank, took the helm in September 2022 to oversee the Hub’s expansion into seven global financial centers. The division was established in 2019 to guide central banks through emerging technologies like CBDCs.

The abrupt departure raises questions about continuity in the BIS’s digital currency initiatives at a critical juncture for institutional crypto adoption. No successor has been named for the role overseeing key projects in London, Hong Kong and other financial hubs.
